Assessment of Digital Elevation Models Derived Using Radar Interferometry

چکیده
Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) has been developed as a powerful technique to derive high quality digital elevation models (DEMs) from a pair of SAR images. (Honikel, 1998) This paper describes InSAR processing principle, the crucial steps in deriving high quality DEMs from the C-band ERS Tandem Mission data, and addresses possible error sources before and during the processing such as phase noise, orbit errors, and propagation effects. The greatest challenge in DEM quality assessment is to adjust the geographical information of the DEM to correspond with the actual geographical coordinates. This technique is called ‘georeferencing’, and it can be achieved by either referencing to the aerial orthophoto or the geographical information obtained from ground control points (GCPs). Therefore, two technical approaches are investigated and experimented, and the results are presented in the paper.

A Digital Elevation Model (DEM) represents the height of a patch of terrain. Accuracies of DEMs vary depending upon the requirements of different applications. DEMs have been applied to a wide range of civil engineering and military planning tasks. Besides the conventional methods of creating DEMs, such as photogrammetry and manual field survey, airborne laser scanning and radar interferometry ...

The accuracy of a digital elevation model (DEM) generated from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry (InSAR) crucially depends on the length of the perpendicular baseline between SAR acquisitions. ERS-2 and Envisat cross-InSAR (CInSAR) are superior methods to create high precise DEM because the perpendicular baseline can be extended sufficiently long by compensating a slight difference ...

Flooding is one of the most devastating natural disasters occurring annually in the Philippines. A call for a solution for this malady is very challenging as well as crucial to be addressed. Mapping flood hazard is an effective tool in determining the extent and depth of floods associated with hazard level in specified areas that need to be prioritized during flood occurrences. Precedent to the...

High resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) have been used in many applications such as civic planning, military mapping and navigation, natural hazard risk assessment, to name only a few. It has been a long history of using photogrammetry and dense ground surveys to draw the contour lines of the terrain and create the elevation model. Nowadays high precision DEMs with the vertical resoluti...
